Heroes such as the Leper and Grave Robber can be helpful as it removes/ignores the Block token on an enemy. The Heroes used for this guide are the ones who can deal DOT with different status effects and can manage the team's stress, increase Blight and Bleed resistance, and overall heal the team.
Players can also be rewarded with Baubles (In-game currency) that are used to purchase the items and equipment in the game or obtain Mastery Point(s) that can be used to upgrade the Skills of the Heroes in Darkest Dungeon 2. Maybe he got a string of failed retreats? I know last time I accidentally ran into a Shambler,* it took a few tries to retreat successfully. If you're playing with standard options, however, retreat is not a guaranteed success. 
Why didn't you just retreat.? You can retreat starting up to round 2, since you can't retreat if you get surprised. Probably the first fight so far to really give the game a true lovecraftian feeling for me at least.īut whatever, I'll just make sure to never interact with a mysterious looking obelisk again. Still, the real suprise was two of my heroes becoming virtuous during this battle making the desperation more intense as they fell one by one to this incomprehensible thing.
